My Mirror Dinghy
by Bob Young
The Mirror dinghy was designed by Englishman Jim Holt, N.A. and introduced in England in 1963. It was a promotion by the London Mirror newspaper to encourage more boating. It was very unique because it used narrow linen tape to hold pieces together. The method was stronger, simpler, better. We now see it heavily used and call it "Tape Seam Construction". (many RiversWest boats made this way including the i550 fleet).
Over 75,000 Mirror kits have been sold all over the world with fleets everywhere it seems. The boat has two flotation chambers (side seats), dagger board, etc. The rule is that it always have RED SAILS. My Mirror was fitted with a 1 1/2 hp Johnson motor.
Here are four pictures of my dear old Mirror Dinghy (kit built by me in 1973). #52023 still is active and now lives with my grandson in Port Orchard.
